Kangoku Gakuen/Prison School Manga Review (NSFW)

I began reading Prison School back when it was starting out, I don’t mind admitting the entire reason I picked it up in the first place was for wrangling the wiggler to Vice President Meiko which is the reason pretty much everyone did. While she brought me to it, the comedy is more of what kept me around early on – I looked forward to reading new chapters because at times it was fucking hilarious and at worst it was silly fun with things like speech bubbles seemingly coming out of certain places that shouldn’t be talking. It managed to have so much fantastic ecchi sluttiness while somehow making you more interested in the comedy surrounding that and the MALE CHARACTERS who were an eccentric bunch of fucking weirdos.

Yes, instead of coming for the big milkers you come to see the school chairman giving intense speeches about why he (wrongly) believes asses are better than boobs and for the hijinks that came about from the guys trying to break out of the prison or get girlfriends.

For the first third or so, this is actually a great and very unique manga with a great mix of whip the dick out time and laughing…but once that portion ends it comes tumbling down at an extreme speed. The focus changes from comedy, fanservice, and the gang being dumbasses to being some really overly self-serious poorly written attempt at a “real story” and “deep characters” by a writer who has no talent at writing anything but simple sex jokes and excuses to show a pussy sweating onto someone’s face. All the fun and most of the sexiness got replaced by this new group who never existed before but now was in charge and threw the ex-student council who ran the prison into the prison while the boys had been discharged and for some reason had their entire personalities removed from them. It was still kind of tolerable but it became a mess and every chapter was more nonsensical – in a non fun way – than the last, and more often than not you would have no grasp on what was even happening because so much was going on yet none of it was interesting enough to remember and none of the cast had any personality to attribute to them any longer.

You still had some fanservice but it was very rare in comparison to earlier on and even when it would appear it was hampered by a billion pages of words, words, and more words that were uninteresting and unfunny only comparable to Buckley – like trying to have sex with someone who isn’t really participating and instead lifelessly reading out the script of Bakemonogatari the whole time.

The comedy was basically the same way; a single joke would span multiple chapters and the ‘payoff’ would be some retarded shit about the stupid fucking bottle rocket they made in some chapter I couldn’t be fucked to pay attention to which remains a “relevant” thing for the entire rest of the manga and not once does it make sense or make you laugh yet it’s almost in every goddamn chapter from then on.

Then the final third portion of the manga shows up and it’s the absolute worst. The cast no longer is just lacking in personality, they’re completely different from who they were before and their actions make no sense for who they’ve been shown to be. Some just become complete nonsensical caricatures – most notably the Fat Fuck, Vice President, and the (other) Sadist Girl. Hell, Fat Fuck literally becomes a gigantic monstrosity that MULTIPLE PEOPLE can ride on the back of and it’s not a metaphor or something he just literally becomes that and is a CENTRAL VERY IMPORTANT PLOT POINT for not only like 50 chapters but also to how the conclusion of the entire manga plays out because HAHA ISN’T THAT FUNNY SOMEHOW?

And, well really that’s part of the biggest problem which was the stupid sports festival where the ENTIRE manga just went off the rails and was a showcase of how untalented and directionless the mangaka actually was. At a point it’s not even possible to maintain the identity of half the cast and the relationships between them become even more confusing because half the non-main girls aren’t even people you can tell are who they are – I thought it was just some random girl all those chapters having her nipple broadcast on a live stream, not Anzu who barely existed but was a cute girlfriend of one of the dudes.

You’ve got Fat Fuck becoming a gigantic mindless creature who canonically can’t even think any more and is a literal animal being controlled by whoever beats him hard enough – and of course a girl obsessed with doing just that for no reason. You’ve got Gakuto for some reason becoming an ultra-sperg who can’t even speak in a way that’s remotely understandable and had to be translated like he’s a retard in a Shakespeare play whenever he talks and all he talks about is indeed verily the three kingdoms of yore when, while that was always part of who he was, it was always only that – “part” of it. He’s also for some reason really popular with the hottest girl in the school and never shuts up about the fucking bottle rocket. You’ve got Chiyo who is just a completely bland nobody from the get go to begin with now still maintaining that.

You’ve got Hana becoming a massive degenerate who loves piss and starts losing her mind for no reason – though honestly she was one of the only ones who the author actually gave some development for with that happening and it wasn’t really that bad to see her realizing what a horny weirdo she was, plus with her that sort of started from the very beginning. The way it ends up though was retarded.

You’ve got the MC who…I don’t even know. He changes almost every fucking chapter and at one point he literally dies and time actually freezes while he goes around literally molesting his classmates who are semi-aware but unable to stop it. He also starts to like being pissed on.

You’ve got the other guys becoming fucking irrelevant entirely but somehow still wasting pages. You’ve got a bunch of girls you can’t remember. You’ve got the chairman turning from a funny over the top “man’s man” out of an Old Spice commercial into an insane clusterfuck of dumb bullshit the author thought was hilarious like having him randomly get amnesia then somehow managing to crash a helicopter into the school that he stole from a bear in the mountains where he met some random American slut while in a cage or some bullshit.

I remembered better than I realized. Also it sounds short but this went on throughout like 40 fucking chapters.

I could keep going because EVERY SINGLE THING IS EXACTLY LIKE THIS suddenly in the last chunk of the manga.

The only thing keeping me reading through all of that was Hana’s story, I wanted to know what would happen to her. She was never made to be the main character’s girl of choice and yet the author, unsurprisingly with how retarded everything else went, made her much more relevant as a romance partner for him and continually pushed – near non-stop – for them to be a thing and they pretty much have done everything together aside full penetration; from pissing on each other multiple times because they’re fucking freaks to MC basically eating her out while the girl he liked was unaware they were in the room (after having pissed on each other, if I recall, if not before then after for sure).

Not that scene, just another one where they’re doing watersports because that’s just what they do.

Even with how much of a degenerate she becomes, Hana was still written to be sweet under it all and just be a girl having a hard time understanding and accepting her feelings…but then she NEVER understands or accepts her feelings. Ever. Nothing happens, in fact she just acts as a contrived way for things to work out or not work out based on how the author felt at the time. At the end she…uh…nothing. She has no conclusion. Her feelings become more and more obvious and her fighting against them as well – but then she finally starts making moves to do something about them and nothing ever happens. In fact all she does is act as an excuse to make the MC not get anyone.

In the almost second-to-last page of the entire manga it just has him pissing all over her grinning face in front of his now-for-like-5-pages-then-broken-up-after-this-part girlfriend while she’s straddling him completely bottomless in a park and that’s it. A strange way to cuck someone, really, but Chiyo had it coming.

Why? Because, the mangaka failed to realize just how popular Hana would become. It’s another case of the Sashas – wherein you VERY CLEARLY MURDER ONE OF YOUR CHARACTERS to only have her revived magically back in her home village many chapters later after you realize SHE WAS THE MOST POPULAR CHARACTER and don’t want to deal with the ire of the fanbase. In this case Hana never died, but she was continually made to clearly never be the victor of her romance – and in the end the author just couldn’t handle what would happen had he not given her that victory, so he gave literally everyone nothing. Sure similar things happen in lots of anime and manga – but it’s never so drastic about the mangaka forgetting the lead girl ever existed and swapping her out for someone else, realizing he went too far and made everyone love the wrong girl and not give a shit about the main one…then giving neither one the win after spending 200 chapters showcasing why these two will end up together and also all the build up of Hana being more than just a freak because in the end she is just a fucking crazy person and all her “she’s actually really sweet and cute” stuff gets destroyed for no reason as if the author thought he was some making a serious very dark story about a girl in love going actually mad from it without doing anything to earn that.

The MC ends up with neither Hana nor Chiyo as far as the canon goes (we don’t actually see Hana or the MC again after that as the manga ends immediately after so I guess it’s possible they still piss on each other all the time and now mix in diahhrea from time to time). Chiyo, like 2 pages later after some flashback stuff, in 1 page becomes a man-hating feminist cunt as the final frame of the entire manga. I’m not saying I’m upset that he didn’t get with Hana – in fact the MC is completely unironically unlikable so I didn’t give a shit. But to have him end up with neither after randomly having the mangaka treat this like it was a serious romance drama about youth halfway through? Absolutely retarded and simply done to avoid upsetting anyone…even though NOBODY has ever given a shit about Chiyo.

That’s not the only romance that goes nowhere or randomly just gets forgotten about. The blond guy who hasn’t mattered since like chapter 50 has a girlfriend I think and she’s the one who apparently is still around that I mentioned earlier having her tit streamed without realizing it. I don’t know if they’re still going out, I’ve forgotten and don’t really give a shit, but in the end he ditches her to ride on the plastic bottle rocket boat they made because the mangaka REALLY THOUGHT THE PLASTIC BOTTLE ROCKET WAS FUCKING HILARIOUS AND WENT SO FAR AS TO MAKE IT THE CONCLUSION OF HALF THE MAIN CAST.

The same for the…the other guy. The guy with the hoodie who liked ants or some shit. I don’t even remember if any girl ever liked him but he also floats away on the fucking bottle rocket ship. So does Gakuto after…well, let’s spend some time on him because it’s well let’s just go with ‘super interesting’.

While his stuff is also retarded, Gakuto at least FINALLY brought a short resurgence of the fantastic fanservice the manga started out with. Slut-senpai/Bitch – either name you go with, which has to be one of my favorite canonical “names” for a character ever – gets to finally really showcase where she gets her name and given she’s hot I really didn’t mind. Though I don’t really get why she’s so into this loser when she’s a top-tier gal-skank who should be spending all her time riding chads.

Not only does she do A LOT in a box with Gakuto, later she ends up in a match against the girl he REALLY likes to try and win him by doing some tests which ends up with her just masturbating in front of them during a quiz he made up on the spot about the 3 Kingdoms, screaming about how she’s gonna cum all over while fingering herself “because the answer is in there”, and squirting some on the floor because I mean she’s not wrong when she thinks that’s how you win a battle of “who should I go out with?”. It actually works too because he ends up unable to pick due to how much he “loves” the other girl but how correct he is in wanting to fuck Slut, so he ends up with neither. Who wouldn’t just pick the whore?

I mean really, Slut is the only character who truly remained what she was from the start – and more importantly she, even as a barely relevant side character who had almost no time in the entire manga, really was the only thing left that felt like what Prison School started out as; a fun over the top super sexy comedy where the point is putting lewd shit in your face in silly situations. Even her out of nowhere infatuation with this faggot was one she went all out with not just lewdly but trying to become perfect for him – which actually ends up with her and his pseudo-ex becoming friends after their competition. Ironically out of every girl in the manga she also ends up seeming the most sincere by the end of it too. A harmless and not completely bizarre over the top little thing that felt like it’d be more at home 200 chapters ago.

The only way she doesn’t fit in with the rest of the manga is that she is openly and outright doing things like just rubbing one out – while usually the whole of the fanservice was much more “anime”; loads of accidents, freak situations, the piss fetish stuff shoved in CONSTANTLY between Hana and MC because lets not pretend the mangaka doesn’t have a serious interest in it, and a lot of Meiko not realizing the guys were into her doing squats over their faces and such – all of which were elements of the humor. It would have been better if the rest of the series was still that AND ALSO had this girl, literally just called SLUT not even as an insult but as a ‘real’ name, being the only one being an actual on purpose slut but instead she’s somehow now the only representation of what this manga used to be even while going way further.

While she was lettin’ loose the juice she even made sure to pull her panties aside to give a better view – what a proper lady!

Fat Fuck and the girl who was trying to domineer him but failed are the only ones who actually get an ending – they end up a normal couple and drop the weird shit.

Meanwhile the non-relationship stuff is just as fucking stupid with the council president flying some fucking place at the end for no reason and VP and the other cunt chasing her but haha wrong airport and I don’t even fucking know, man. Who gives a shit?

Oh, right, this girl exists I guess? She’s really cute so I’m not sure how I completely forgot about her but she has no relevance at any point and in the final chapters she’s the one streaming the other girl’s nipple and she’s an internet idol or some shit and her channel gets banned. I don’t know why this was relevant but it happens and takes like a full chapter to do so. She’s cute so it’s okay but it’s kind of accidentally the funniest thing about the entire end of the manga because she’s one of the ONLY people who gets closure to her story (being banned from her idol streaming channel).

 

Basically Akira Hiramoto can draw really attractive females and put them in very tasty positions, can write pretty fun awkward and strange situational innuendo comedy, but can’t do much fucking else. Once the first arc ended and the boys got out of prison everything went to shit – fanservice included but absolutely not alone. Prison School should have been a really high ranked comedy AND an equally fantastic ecchi manga – think an even better more directly super lewd and with more nudity and A LOT MORE PISSING version (because this mangaka loves his piss) of Sora no Otoshimono…instead the author tried doing more than he was capable of and never course corrected. It goes far beyond just the ending being bad, don’t let people tell you otherwise – it really is like he started out making an ecchi comedy then decided to attempt at his own version of Onani Master Kurosawa only to COMPLETELY fuck it up in every single way and entirely miss the point. If you’re thinking of watching the anime instead just imagine this but with amazingly shitty art destroying any of the appeal of the girls and a lot of censorship even on the BD releases.

And sorry, but no. Hana is not best girl, maybe if she dropped the whole piss thing and became a gyaru like Slut she could be though. Too bad she just goes insane at the end for no reason instead.
