Dog and Scissors Early Thoughts

Dog & Scissors is one of those shows that looks fucking retarded, kind of like Crime Edge, yet in this case the show is actually good (so far). The story is about a teenager who is obsessed with books and ends up becoming the pet dog of his favorite author – literal dog, not S&M shit. She can also understand his thoughts, so they can communicate easily. It’s a nonsensical comedy with a little bit of equally silly mystery aspects peppered in, and luckily it’s aware of what it is rather than trying to come off as something it’s not. It never takes itself too seriously or goes too “look how silly this is!”, it all feels balanced so that all the nonsensical shit makes you laugh instead of cringe.

The comedy is easily the main focus of this series, and it’s got a lot of it. Most anime comedy are you know, ‘heh’ in your head type of funny, but this one’s had me legitimately laugh a handful of times already. The humor is all over the place and has stuff you could work into anything as well as a lot of things that take full advantage of the nonsensical situation of the story. I figured it’d be mostly “lol I attack you with my scissors” shit, which does happen but rarely enough that it’s actually entertaining when it does, but most of the comedy is actual comedy. Most Japanese shows trying to be funny tend to go toward slapstick, manzai, or misunderstanings, which are fine but they literally do nothing else most of the time or just barely sprinkle it in here and there. Here it feels like the writers (or I suppose the original mangaka) understand a lot more about humor than just what the Japanese culture focuses on so heavily. The main character being a dog also gives a lot of room for more unique jokes and situations using that (like smutty bestiality shit which is hilarious while also disgusting).

The entire cast is a bit crazy but all designed and played out well, they also share really good chemistry between one another. The dog and the novelist (Kirihime) are obviously the main two, and they really play off of each other well, especially with how much of a deviant weirdo Kirihime is. She’s an extreme S but she also is the type who goes from wanting to kill the dog one second to acting all cutesy while worrying about how she’ll have sex with it the next. Among the rest of the cast is Kirihime’s editor who happens to be a fucking incredibly crazy M. I mean she’s so goddamn horny and obsessing over being punished and hurt that her eyes never stop being in a haze of ecstasy and lust even while doing absolutely nothing, and her upper lip is always wiggling like she’s gonna burst any second.

She’s probably my favorite character so far because she’s just so fun to even look at – it’s like they took one of those generic doujins where they force the girl to wear a bunch of dildos and vibrators all day and made that into a real character. I mean what else would explain her seemingly having an orgasm nonstop?

The only issues I have with the show:
Kirihime’s body is kind of gross to look at. It’s super thin but it’s built like a thin male – and not in the ‘lol you look like a boy’ way, but in a seriously off putting way. Not to mention her “flatness” is literally nothing there, so I’m genuinely confused why she wears a bra at all aside maybe having sensitive bits, as she has less breast than a normal guy.

She has broad shoulders, she’s taller than most of the men that appear in the show, and her whole body has absolutely no curves, the closest she gets to any feminine shape is in the ED pictured above. She isn’t “boyish looking flatty”, the way they drew her just comes off as really wrong. It’s like how Canaan’s pancake granny tits upset everyone who watched Canaan – but ten times worse. I looked up how she looks in the manga and she’s drawn MUCH more feminine there – still flat, still all fitting her character, but her legs and shoulders and a little bit of flat but existing chest are all more what you’d expect. In both the manga AND the show though, that slick glossy black hair and her very bright yet deep red eyes look fucking great.

I’d say the next biggest issue I have is that the cute tomboy character is the dog’s literal actual sister. I assumed she was just the “onii-chan” retarded shit friend or cousin type, but no, she’s his sister (same last name and everything) – and she clearly likes him. Regardless if it’s a comedy or not, I can’t stand that incest shit, it’s fucking disgusting and obnoxious and it’s only made worse when they pull the ‘not blood related so its okay’ card (which they haven’t in this show, it might be his real sister but they look nothing alike and it’s anime where everyone is adopted, so we’ll see), which doesn’t make it fucking okay. My last complaint, tied into that, is that the series feels like it might have some harem-ish stuff mixed in or just become a harem straight out – which is kind of funny because he’s a fucking dog now but is also kind of “eh”.

Regardless of those complaints, I’d genuinely recommend it as a very enjoyable, yet at the same time hilariously terrible show that somehow manages not to cross into “so bad it’s good” territory. Not yet, at least.

    • Thanks! I hope you enjoy watching it (and maybe come back and read more of my stuff some time!) – I’ve actually fallen a few episodes behind just because I keep forgetting to watch, but as far as I’ve seen the quality has stayed pretty great.
